We were thinking today, while taking a moment to honor our U.S. Military Veterans on this Veterans Day in the United States, that this might be a great time to remind you that we have some really fantastic Military Fiction for your reading pleasure.
Let us first, and again, say THANK YOU to our veterans. They honored us with their service, and today we honor them in return. We appreciate everyone who has donned the uniform to serve their country, but we offer an extra special thanks to those who faced fighting, prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of a grateful nation. And truly, we are grateful.
We happen to love the Military Fiction category, and (if we may say so ourselves) we have some excellent reading for those of you who share that pleasure. We list them here in alphabetical order, and we hope you find at least one to your liking. Thank you in advance for supporting our hybrid small press and the indie authors who drive our train.
A DEBT OF WAR by Michael Ringering
A Blend of WWII Historical Fiction and Modern-Day Literary Fiction
Available as eBook, Hardcover, and Paperback
A dying wish and a mysterious manuscript bring to light a heart-rending tale of one soldier’s undying commitment to pay a debt owed, transcending both ideology and racial divide, leading to the ultimate price paid.
“Michael Ringering weaves a beautifully layered story, against the most extreme of circumstances, reminding us that what we share will always be more powerful than contemporary forces that would seek to divide. A Debt of War is truly a masterful and timeless piece.” ~ Lt. Col. Casey Grider, United States Air Force
“I’ve read several war books of one stripe or another recently, but I can honestly say that none has touched me to the very core of my being as A Debt of War did… The story is utterly compelling, and the characters jump off the page and attach themselves to the reader’s psyche.” ~ Readers’ Favorite Book Reviews, Grant Leishman (5 STARS)
“Michael Ringering has created a masterly work in his novel, A Debt of War. …a conclusion that rivals the tales of William Sydney Porter, better known by his pen name O. Henry. The comparison is not offered lightly as Michael Ringering has earned it fair and square with this brilliant, compelling tale of the entanglements of life and death—and the debts to be paid.” ~ Readers’ Favorite Book Reviews, Tom Gauthier (5 STARS)
“Exploring how even bitter enemies out to kill each other can find humanity between them, this book is a reminder that wars are fought by real people, each with vivid and complex lives and feelings.” ~ Readers’ Favorite Book Reviews, K.C. Finn (5 STARS)

INDIVISIBLE by Julia Camp
A Blend of Modern-Day Military Fiction (PTSD) and Literary Fiction
Available as eBook, Audiobook, and Paperback
Charlie returns home from Afghanistan to discover that his battles are just beginning.
WINNER: Pinnacle Book Achievement Award – Best Literary Fiction
“Indivisible by Julia Camp is a serious book. You know a book is serious when there’s a suicide on page two and when tears are streaming down your cheeks on page three. … All war veterans deserve our respect and often our sympathy, but this book helps us see and especially feel why. … Like all great works of art—Hamlet, say—there are no answers. Great works leave us with questions, not resolutions. They don’t satisfy; they provoke. They change us. Indivisible has left me with all those questions I thought I’d solved long ago. It’s a serious thing to ask those questions, and Indivisible is a serious book.” ~ Readers’ Favorite Book Reviews, Jon Michael Miller (5 STARS)

MOON PATH by Steven Greenberg
A Blend of WWII Historical Fiction and Jewish Cultural Fiction
Available as eBook, Audiobook, and Paperback
How far can fraternal love stretch?
Amazon #1 Bestseller in 2 Countries!
WINNER: Pinnacle Book Achievement Award, Summer 2019 – Best Literary Fiction
FINALIST: Beverly Hills Book Awards 2019 – Historical Fiction
“The intricacy of detail and research in author Steven Greenberg’s work makes his novel feel like both a reading and learning experience at the same time. The commitment to character development is so strong that it’s easy to forget that Samuel and Aron are fictional, for the struggles they go through reflect the real lives of so many people living all across Europe at the time of the Second World War. The plot is well paced to reveal the chain of events in both their lives, and their fraternal connection sees them through hardships, but is also put to the most extreme tests that human cruelty can throw at them. Overall, Moon Path is a superbly atmospheric work of historical fiction with characters that, once met, are never forgotten.” ~ K.C. Finn, Readers’ Favorite Book Reviews (5 Stars)

RED CLAY, YELLOW GRASS by Richard Barager
A Blend of Vietnam War Historical Fiction and 1960s Cultural Fiction
Available as eBook, Audiobook, and Paperback
A startlingly vivid portrayal of the 1960s, as seen through the eyes of two ill-fated college lovers. The story of their generation spills across some of the era’s most iconic settings: the legendary battleground of Khe Sanh; a Midwestern campus riven by dissent; and Altamont Speedway, scene of the notorious rock festival that ended the Sixties.
Booklist says: “…Barager’s dynamic, passionate, often moving exploration of the turbulent and politically divided 1960s… is striking. The cast of complicated characters adds arresting human dimensions.”
Kirkus Indie says: “Barager spins a compelling tale of youthful passion, both personal and political… a rich, satisfying experience. A well-written, gripping novel that expertly blends fact and fiction, love and conviction.”
David Horowitz, Bestselling Author and Former New Left Radical, says, “Richard Barager has written the novel of the Sixties–a passion-filled, pitch-perfect, roller coaster of a tale about the decade that divides us all.”

THE FUTILITY OF LOVING A SOLDIER by E.D. Martin
A Blend of Military/War Fiction (PTSD), Literary Fiction, and Women’s Issues Fiction
Available as eBook and Audiobook (Paperback Only Available Directly from Author)
Eleven compelling stories that explore the physical and psychological effects of combat, both on those who serve and those back home.
Serenity (A Navy Vet…VT town, and an Amazon Top 500 Reviewer), says: “This is an outstanding collection of stories about veterans of wars. WW I, Nam, WW II, Desert Storm and more. All of them will tug at your heart and make you realize that some vets never get over the traumatic events of war (or their service).”
IndMind says, “Strong writing that resists the temptation to stick to the usual narrative. A look at the effect of the returning warrior’s experience on the family, in a way that many of us can relate to and in some ways a cathartic way.”
Jeff Suwak says, “I had to stop reading this and set the book down a couple times. I had five combat deployments and was married through all of them. Over the years, I’ve read many accounts of soldier life that were hollow and inauthentic, sometimes insultingly so. But, this collection hit home in many ways. I wouldn’t say it was a fun read, but it was often a powerful one. It brought up a lot of emotions, but ultimately in a cathartic way.”
Karen White says, “Beautifully written stories with emotional depth. … The stories and themes are universal in their reach.”
Author Barry Metcalf says, “An insightful and sensitive account of the lives of those who fall in love with soldiers and who must live with the shattered lives of those who go to war to protect their country and their loved ones. I particularly enjoyed the way the various stories in this collection interwove with each other. When I turned the last page, I was disappointed there weren’t any more. My favourite tale was the first one from which the title of this novel was taken. A must read for anyone who has loved or known a soldier.”
