Quality is Priority #1:
This is not only our mantra; it’s practically our religion. Toward that end, the stars around which the rest of our organization orbits are the authors. Their work is the locomotive for our train.
When our founders first envisioned Evolved Publishing, they did so from an author’s perspective. Each step of the way, they asked themselves this simple question: “As authors, what would we want from our publisher?” The answer to that question guided their choices as they determined how to structure EP as a small press.
While it was never their intention to throw stones at the traditional publishing industry, they nonetheless disliked some of the old practices of that industry. They believed that authors deserved greater consideration, well-deserved respect, more control over their own careers, and higher royalty rates. They sought to build an organization where authors could say, “I get a pretty great deal here.”
Now, we strive to adhere to the simplest of management philosophies: The Golden Rule. (“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”)
We also want to foster a friendly atmosphere where the entire EP team can come together and work in a coordinated, supportive, cooperative, motivating environment. The team philosophy is so very important to everything EP does.
From Founder, Majority Owner, and CEO Lane Diamond: “Have we succeeded at our goals? I think we have. Sure, we had our share of growing pains, as any new business does, in no small part because we simply grew so fast. However, we’ve settled into a place where everyone seems to be moving along nicely. The team environment is particularly important at a time when the marketplace is not all that we’d like it to be. This is no simple business – just ask anyone trying their hand at self-publishing these days – but I think we’ve struck on an outstanding model, one that evolves on a regular basis as market conditions and industry expectations change. We’re always ready to shift gears, and always after talking over the circumstances with our entire team. We try to be an open book, to engage our team in all the critical decisions we make, and we hope that gives them a sense that they’re firmly invested in the course of their careers.”
“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.” – Charles Darwin*
*This may, in fact, have not been Darwin. There is some dispute over that. Still, it fits nicely with our general theme and philosophy.
