Evolved Publishing Earns New Honors and Awards in May 2014

And the awards just keep on coming….

We speak often of our commitment to quality, and awards are a sure way to bolster that claim. We understand that awards are both highly subjective and incredibly competitive, which makes receiving them a real challenge. Indeed, we believe some of our books have been extremely deserving of awards for which they were nominated, and yet they came up short in the voting. After all, judges are people, too, and they have their own preferences.

Nonetheless, we’re always pleased when our hard work is recognized by others in the industry. Most recently, we’ve added a few more awards to our shelf.

Publisher Award

Awesome Indies-ApprovedFirst, we have to thank the good folks at Awesome Indies for making Evolved Publishing their first outside publisher to receive the Awesome Indies Seal of Approval. As they explain on their website, Awesome Indies has some tough, uncompromising criteria for the awarding of their seal of approval, as explained here. We are pleased to have met their criteria on a consistent basis, thus earning their trust – and their seal of approval – as a publisher. When looking for books that will stand up to your own high standards, you would do well to trust Awesome Indies as a source of recommendations. We’re gratified to be one of those recommendations.

Book Awards

In the past few weeks, a number of our books have achieved special recognition.

Hot_Sinatra_v2_300dpi_200x300 ArthurEllisAwardsFinalistOn April 24th, the big news for us from our neighbors up north was that the Crime Writers of Canada selected Hot Sinatra by Axel Howerton as one of five finalists for the Arthur Ellis Award for Best First Novel. Hot Sinatra was chosen with 4 other books from a large field, and whether it ultimately wins the award or not (to be announced at the Arthur Ellis Awards gala dinner on Thursday, June 5, at the Arts & Letters Club in downtown Toronto), we are honored that Mr. Howerton’s book has made the cut.

Robert Pease and Noah Zarc: Mammoth Trouble, the first book in this middle grade sci-fi adventure series. First came the news that this wonderful book earned an Honorable Mention from the Eric Hoffer Awards 2014, making it one of their TOP 7 books in this vast Juvenile and Young Adult category. Then came the news that Awesome Indies recognized the book with their seal of approval in the Middle Grade category. Noah Zarc: Mammoth Trouble had already won several prestigious awards before this, but we’re so pleased to add these to its list of accomplishments.
And then we have the guy hogging up all the awards!

The_Silver_Sphere_v3_300dpi_200x300 National Indie Excellence Book AwardsAuthor Michael Dadich just received his 14th award – that’s right, 14 – for his debut sci-fi/fantasy novel, The Silver Sphere. And why not? This fantasy/science fiction adventure, or sci-fa in the grand Star Wars tradition, has readers and critics alike talking, and once you have 13 awards… well, you naturally want the 14th. 🙂 Well, the folks at the National Indie Excellence Awards have made that happen, recognizing The Silver Sphere as their best in Fantasy for 2014.
We expect to be back soon with more great announcements about honors for our books, but in the meantime, you can keep track of them yourself by stopping in at our Awards Won page from time to time. Thank you, and we hope you enjoy these fun and fantastic books.

Noir Detective Mystery “Hot Sinatra” by Axel Howerton an Award Finalist

Announcement from Crime Writers of Canada: April 24, 2014 — Hot Sinatra is one of the five finalists for the Arthur Ellis Award for Best First Novel.

ArthurEllisAwardsFinalist“Quality is Priority #1.” We say that a lot, because we think it’s important to drive that guarantee home for our readers and fans. Of course, winning a prestigious award, or even making the final cut as a finalist within a broad and competitive field, is a great way to support that statement.

Our most recent honoree is the quirky, hardboiled detective, noir mystery Hot Sinatra, by Axel Howerton. We’re pleased that the judges for the Arthur Ellis Awards have recognized the quality of this great book, which offers a character-rich environment that readers are sure to love.

We’re confident you’re going to enjoy this book. If you’re a fan of the likes of Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, Elmore Leanord, Robert B. Parker, and Mickey Spillane, or just love a well-written, funny, entertaining story, Hot Sinatra is your next must-read.

Hot_Sinatra_v2_300dpi_200x300Moss Cole is a private detective, the kind you thought only existed in old movies and afternoon reruns. He’s smart, talented, sometimes even charming. You’d think he could find a better gig than carrying on his grandfather’s legacy as a ‘Private Dick.’

Cole is out of money, out of ideas, and out of his league. That’s why he’s stuck looking for a stolen Sinatra record… a record that may be just a figment of an old man’s imagination.

Of course, if that were true, Moss wouldn’t have so many people busting down his door.

A vivacious redhead, a foul-mouthed Irish rock star, and a whip-smart little girl only complicate the job, when all Cole wants is a good cup of coffee and some Hot Sinatra.

If only he can stay alive—and in one piece—long enough to find it.

“Axel Howerton is one of the best new crime fiction writers out there—hell, one of the best writers, period. Do yourself a favor and settle into Axel’s groove.” – Scott S. Phillips, Author of “Squirrel Eyes” and “Tales of Misery & Imagination,” and Writer/Director of “Stink of Flesh” and “Gimme Skelter”

“Moss Cole sizzles hotter than bacon.” – Red Tash, Author of “Troll, Or Derby” and “This Brilliant Darkness”

“Howerton manages to breathe new life into the neo-noir/gumshoe genre by not fixing what isn’t broken. The hero, Moss Cole, is tough as nails, fights dirty, is a recovered alcoholic and is a bit of a brooder. However, he feels pangs for not seriously pursuing a career as a professional musician, and makes no effort to conceal his sensitive side. Howerton also gives us some unexpected characters in the form an openly gay couple that work as low level leg breakers for the mob (they’re a real treat, and never do what I expected as a reader). Perhaps Howerton’s greatest triumph is coming up with a fun, wickedly original MacGuffin for a detective novel: The titular ‘Hot Sinatra’, an illegal, one of a kind recording of a Sinatra performance in his prime that avid collectors would kill to get. Snappy dialogue, fun characters and a no frills writing style made this a blast to read.” – Craig, Kew Gardens, NY
