Working to Build a Stronger Alternative for Indie Authors
Yep, we’re looking to the public to help us ramp up our game a bit. The campaign is running here: End of Summer 2014 – New Visions.
First, what’s in it for you? Well, that’s easy, and it’s really two-fold:
- You support an artistic team so that they can continue to bring you great material well into the future. You help ensure that we can continue to open up new opportunities for the indie authors, editors, artists, and translators that make up our essential team. And you help us to grow that team.
- You get a real value for your contribution. Whether you’re contributing $2, $5, or $500, you get more than your money’s worth in the end. This was important to us.
Why a Crowdfunding Campaign?
We thought long and hard about this. On the one hand, we have a business that should be self-supporting. On the other hand, we’re a relatively new business that is still seeking to find its place and really make its mark in the marketplace. This has been hindered as much by the general state of the economy as anything else.
We believe strongly that we’re putting together a first-rate team of talented individuals, and we want them to be successful in their endeavors not just for their sakes, but for yours. We’ve put out some absolutely wonderful books (if we do say so ourselves), and we want to continue doing so long into the future. Will we have to stop if our crowdfunding campaign fails? No, but this gives us opportunities to step things up and power through the tough times.
Many of you may not know, but we as a publisher take a smaller percentage of the profits on any given book than perhaps any other publisher in the business. In turn, we pay exceptionally high royalty percentages, and fair commission rates to editors, artists, translators, and the entire supporting team on any project. Of course, high percentages for them only helps if the books actually sell.
As for us, the very low commissions we take as publisher is a bit of a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it allows us to attract great authors who produce some fantastic work, encouraging them to come on board with us rather than pursue the self-publishing option. This is critical for us, because our slogan–Quality is Priority #1–is more than just a slogan; it lies at the very heart of everything we do. On the other hand, those low commissions during hard economic times, meaning lower sales for almost everyone in this business, make it tough to keep the business moving forward, and not just stalled in a holding pattern.
Thus, we believe we offer something fairly unusual, if not outright unique (we think some folks are trying to copy our model *wink*), for both authors (and the team that supports them) and readers. Ah yes, readers….
In the end, as much as we talk about what we do for indie authors and their supporting teams, this is really all about the readers. After all, we have a product to sell: great books. Without equally great readers, those books are meaningless
And so we hope you’ll want to participate in this campaign not just to support the arts, and our small place in that world, but because you’ll get a really great deal no matter which contribution option you choose.
