Born in 1943 into a working class family with middle class aspirations, I began writing stories while at school, finally venturing into novels when I retired from teaching in 1997. The result was a series of murder mysteries set in Australia and featuring two unorthodox investigators, who work for the fictional Strange & Obscure Cases (SOC) Unit, an autonomous offshoot of ASIO.

Encouraged by positive feedback, the stories flow easily and usually reflect my bizarre sense of reality and weird humour. When the muse’s ego is bruised, I bide my time, reworking old short stories into Sci-Fi novels and waiting for new ideas to evolve. The longest time I’ve gone without writing anything new has been eighteen months, but when the drought broke, the words flowed thick and fast.

Three times married, with four children, I live in Morwell, Victoria, Australia.

Some say I was born with a red pen in my hand, so it’s no surprise that my penchant for words and stories ultimately led to a career in writing and editing.

My literary tastes vary, but I largely gravitate toward genre fiction. I’ll read anything sci-fi, fantasy, horror, western, and so forth. Some of my favorite contemporary authors are Dan Simmons, Chuck Wendig, David Brin, George R. R. Martin, and John Scalzi.

One of my passions besides writing and editing is the gaming industry. In addition to having a love for games of all kinds—card games, board games, miniatures games, etc.—I’ve also contributed writing, editing, and game design to a number of different game lines over the years.

I was reading books before age five. I have a vivid memory of a teacher at my preschool asking us if anyone was interested in learning how to read. I thought that learning how to read would be like unlocking this secret universe that only adults had access to, and I jumped at the chance. From that moment on, I devoured anything I could get my hands on.

I carried my love for reading and writing as I grew older. I’ve worked in the publishing industry for almost a decade now and I spent a large chunk of those years working as a development editor. There is nothing I love more than to help an author polish her prose and find her voice. I am always so thrilled to watch authors I have worked with succeed in the industry.

I live in Boston with my husband and our three cats, all named after characters from the TV show LOST. When we aren’t dealing with frigid temperatures and blizzards in New England, my husband and I love to travel around the country to follow our favorite bands on their summer tours.

I love falling into a story and just going along for the ride, but I also love capturing a story and examining it like a naturalist would, trying to figure out what makes it tick and how it turned out so beautiful.

I started out editing National Geographic books, and have been editing full time for over five years now, working on all genres but specializing in science fiction and fantasy. I love my job more all the time. Being able to help storytellers bring their ideas to life and seeing them grow as artists is incredibly rewarding.

In my spare time, I like to wander through quiet forests or abandoned buildings, learn new things about the universe, and take long train rides to anywhere. You’ll never catch me out of the house without a paperback, audio book, or eBook in my bag.

My favorite authors are those who write beautifully, give me new perspectives, and stay playful even when exploring dark places. Some of my favorites are Phillip K. Dick, Kurt Vonnegut, China Miéville, Roald Dahl, Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Vernor Vinge, Jonathan Lethem, and Octavia Butler.

Jeff Altabef lives in New York with his wife, two daughters, and Charlie the dog. He spends time volunteering at the Writing Center in the local community college. After years of being accused of “telling stories,” he thought he would make it official. He writes in both the thriller and young adult genres. As an avid Knicks fan, he is prone to long periods of melancholy during hoops season.

Jeff has a column on The Examiner focused on writing and a blog on The Patch designed to encourage writing for those that like telling stories.

Watch for THE IMMORTALS, the third and final book in the “Red Death” series of epic fantasy/dystopian adventures, to release on 7 March 2022. You’ll be able to pre-order the eBook at Amazon by 15 January 2022.

Most believe the Immortals are a myth, a folk story meant to frighten children, but Wilky and Aaliss discover the truth is even more frightening than the myths.

Wilky, once a boy filled with light and a healer, is now the Ghost King, drawn to darkness and violence. As powerful enemies descend on Eden, he must find another, the true child of light, to help him save Eden and keep the world from descending into darkness. Does he have time? Can he still be trusted? Will he instead succumb to power and darkness?

Meanwhile, Aaliss is pushed to the limit to bring justice to Eden, and joins with the most unlikely of allies. In the end, she must accept the magic inside her, or all will be lost. Will she pass her ultimate test?
