Yup, I was one of those kids. Call me an avid reader or a book nerd, but my head was buried in books as I walked down the halls. The librarian knew me by first name and favorite genre, and I thought the March sisters were way cooler than the girls in school. Things haven’t changed much. I still love the way a great book can transport me to a different place and time, and I continue to bond with imaginary characters and fantastic stories.

I was born and raised in New Jersey but don’t hold that against me. Believe it or not, New Jersey has some beautiful spots and I’m lucky enough to live in one of them with a pack load of males (my husband, 3 sons and 2 Havenese furry boys). I’ve been a writer most of my life, starting in 3rd grade when my short story won the school writing competition. It was about a family that lived in a freckle, so I guess I’ve suffered from FPP (fantasy prone personality) from an early age. Thank God!

I’ve written for over thirty years, mostly non-fiction technical pieces on how to use systems and equipment that most users threw away and opted to figure out on their own. I’ve worked as a staff reporter for my local paper, The Breeze, covering the Bridgewater/ Raritan, NJ area with a specialty in human interest stories. I was also the Creative Editor for the online monthly publication, DoJo Digest, and wrote “From a Mother’s Point of View” and “Hot Tips” columns.

My short story, Combat Paper, was published in Folio Oak Literary Magazine and won the Writer’s Village University short story contest. Other work has appeared in Edify Publications, Blink Ink, City Kidz World Magazine, and blogs galore. The Soul of the Elephant is my first full-length historical novel. I hope to transport readers to a magical and mystical world (even if for just a little while) jampacked with mahouts, spirit animals, wonderworkers, and adventure.

COMING MAY 2019: Soul of the Elephant (The Kind Mahout – Book 1):

When fifteen-year-old Hemit breaks family tradition by learning the mysterious soother’s gentler ways of training elephants, he unleashes his own mystical powers—powers his parents have tried to conceal, and which are capable of destroying his entire family.

South India, 1870s. At the family elephant camp, Hemit’s father insists on quashing their elephants’ spirits to gain complete domination, but Hemit believes the relationship between an elephant and mahout should be based on trust and love, not fear. When he stands up for the elephants, he and his father clash with devastating consequences.

Hemit ignores his father’s warnings about the mysterious elephant trainer rumored to use black magic to soothe rogue elephants. In secret, he befriends the elusive mystical, and learns the secret language and ways of the pachyderms. When he unleashes his own mystical powers to mend the broken soul of an abused elephant, a magical bond among healer, boy, and elephant develops.

Will his father embrace his son’s newly roused abilities, or try to quash his spirit, too?

I’m a Russian author, born in Siberia. My pen name, Hope Silver, is a translation of my real, very long Russian name, Nadezhda Serebrennikova.

I’ve always loved writing. I worked as a journalist in a few newspapers in St. Petersburg and finished my first novel when we lived in the Czech Republic. When we moved to the US in 2013, I started writing a blog about my life in Berkeley, California, with my husband, son, daughter, and about our love for traveling and adventures.

“Why do you want to move to America?” they asked us during the interview in the US consulate in Moscow, after I won a green card lottery.

My 10-year-old son raised his hand and said, “We are travelers.”

I strongly believe that dreams come true if you want something badly enough. Many of my stories, short or long, for adults or for the kids, are about dreamers who don’t give up, like the main character of my novel, Born – Against All Odds – a child’s soul who stops at nothing on the way to his future mom.

In its Russian original, Born – Against All Odds was selected as ‘Best Book of the Year’ in the fantasy genre, at the International Russian Writers competition in Germany (2015). Its English translation by Krystyna Steiger (Canada) was awarded the second prize at the “Open Eurasia 5th International Writers Competition” in London in 2016. And the new edited version by Evolved Publishing won the Pinnacle Book Achievement Award in the US for Best Fantasy (Summer 2019).

In seventh grade, Mrs. Trader inspired me both as a writer and a teacher. In her class, I learned I loved to write and that my classmates liked to hear my stories. Her spirited students engaged in dramatic performances, hands-on projects, and lively discussions—nothing like the poor subdued souls across the hall, managed by the teacher with long green eyes. So Mrs. Trader was my model when I started a school and set aside my writing—that is, until it dawned on me that tribes of children have loved learning by listening to stories for thousands of years. So I wrote about a million words that speak to head and heart, which I am still reading to my child listeners. But now I’m writing stories, my second million words, to speak to the heads and hearts of adult readers and listeners, and hoping my classmates will like them.

Both Imperial Governor Scholtz and the Sovereignty Movement face a wildcard: a self-proclaimed queen, armed with an unstoppable A.I. and unbeatable warriors.

Eena is discouraged because the Sovereignty Movement has reached an all-time low, and martial law increasingly cramps the workers’ freedom. The students, pulled from the university to work at Onmatson Farm, labor under deplorable conditions. The cloned babies still face a dehumanized future. And Caellum, the leader who’s presumed dead, slinks about in Transtopia’s shadows until the oppressed farm hands revolt.

How will Biate, ensconced in Denver Airport and called “The Mad Queen,” impact the power struggle between Imperial Governor Charles Scholtz and the Sovereignty Seekers. Her unbeatable military force, and her connection to a powerful A.I., worries Dora and Caellum. So does her determination to obtain a child—not just any child, but a child of royal lineage—because when Dora gives birth to Michael, he’s the only such child around.
