Some of Karissa’s favorite things are coffee, chocolate, and superheroes, and she can quote Princess Bride verbatim. She loves to read and has a sweet tooth for speculative fiction. Sometimes her family convinces her to put down the books and take the motorcycles out for a spin, or they’ll haunt flea markets, searching for rusty scraps to reuse and re-purpose. Karissa lives in North Carolina with her kid, her husband, the occasional in-law, and a very hairy husky named Bonnie.

Karissa is also the author of the adult Urban Fantasy series, The Norse Chronicles, where she puts a modern twist on ancient myths. The first book, Midnight Burning is available now. Her first effort with Evolved Publishing will be the Stormbourne Chronicles, a Young Adult Fantasy series.

If she fails, her enemy’s dark Magic will enslave her and destroy everything and everyone she loves.

James W. Hughes

Description

I came across the idea for my first novel almost by accident. I was at home on summer break from school–I use the word “summer” lightly, as I’m from the north of England–when a news article caught my eye. It was titled “The First Person to Live to 1000 has Already Been Born.” A year (and several drafts) later I had a manuscript for my first novel: Uploaded.

These days I live in Lancaster, a place equally as cold and wet, with seven of my friends. When I’m not writing (or procrastinating), I alternate my time between finishing off my degree in marketing, cooking, travelling, and running.

Watch for James’s second novel in the dystopian YA series, Uploaded: Viral, to come in the fall of 2017.

The Underground has fallen.

The Enclave has delivered a crushing blow to the Outside, but Xander has not lost hope. As the immortal race revel in their victory, he is back in the walled city, uploaded and desperately trying to unravel the president’s sinister plan from the inside.

Rachel has survived the battle, but now lives trapped in the former rebel stronghold. She must learn the ways of the president’s regime to keep not only herself safe, but also those dearest to her.

And all the while, the spark of rebellion grows brighter. Almost as bright as a strange, flickering flame to the north where the Wildlanders have suddenly resurfaced, determined to avenge those the Enclave has taken.

War is brewing.

Derek Taylor Kent is an author, screenwriter, and performer based out of Los Angeles, California. He graduated from UCLA with a degree in theater and playwriting. After realizing a career as a theater actor in LA wasn’t possible, he launched his writing career, penning the hit musical King Kalimari.

The success of Harry Potter inspired him to rediscover his early love of book writing. After his first novel was soundly rejected, he found success with his second, receiving a three-book deal from HarperCollins for his series Scary School (written under pen name Derek the Ghost). The first book won an award for “Funniest Chapter Book of the Year” by Children’s Literature Network, and the series went on to become one of the most popular for middle-grade readers. His bi-lingual picture book El Perro con Sombrero was released August 2015 through Holt/Macmillan, and quickly became a best-selling new picture book. Other available books include the award-winning educational picture book Simon and the Solar System and the magical adventure Rudy and the Beast.

I was born a bibliophile, but it wasn’t until high school that I discovered my knack for editing and decided I wanted to edit fiction. I love the feel of a book in my hands, and I may or may not be one of those crazy book sniffers.

In my spare time (which is in short supply), I enjoy playing board games and card games with my husband and two teen boys, perusing antique shops, and, of course, reading.

What I love most about editing is cultivating relationships with authors. I feel fortunate to be able to share in their creative vision as an editorial partner. I am inspired by their dedication and I enjoy helping them achieve their goals.

Editor-Inactive

I have loved books since I was too young to remember, my love of books a folktale itself, one told by my mother at family gatherings. I have dim impressions of my mother recounting the stories of The Iliad and The Odyssey, spinning them from memory like a classical orator, and my dad reading me Treasure Island. My mother was an English teacher, and so inevitably she supported my desire to read.

I graduated from Whitman College with a degree in English, and graduated from Portland State University with a degree in Book Publishing. At Whitman I worked as a writing tutor, and at PSU I focused on editing.

My goal as an editor is to help clarify the writer’s vision and polish their story into the best version of itself. Above all, my goal as an editor is communication: helping a writer to translate their thoughts into a form that others can understand.

When not editing, I freelance write for Portland Book Review. I believe a good book review will not only give information about the book, but describe what the book meant to the reviewer–and also say something about the reviewer. A reviewer is, in some ways, no different from a character in a book. If the reader identifies and sympathizes with my point of view as a reviewer, then the reader will be more invested in the review–and more likely to buy the book.

I also enjoy marketing, and work as Marketing Director for AudaVoxx, a newsletter that suggests audiobooks to its subscribers and provides in-house audiobook reviews. I view marketing as having a conversation. It is not a one-way process; or at least, it shouldn’t be. It is an interaction between the company and someone who has a similar interest. In short, a potential friend. Forging that relationship is what creates happy, loyal listeners and customers, and makes a book or event successful (or not). People know if you are just trying to sell them something, or if you are trying to share something in which you believe.

In my spare time, which I don’t really have, I play board games–because I am geeky like that. I should get out of my apartment more. I live in Portland with a very loving and lovely partner, who also writes and arts.
