I have been studying acting and performing since 1973 (gack, can it really be that long?). Since then, I have gone to college and lived the actor-y life of a 20 something in NYC (cocktail waitress, temp, and lots of macaroni and cheese), travelled, worked with individuals with developmental disabilities, married, renovated my house (talk about drama), raised 2 children, learned to walk more than one dog at a time, perfected my pancakes, and braved Disney World.

I have, in the past few years, become a Shakespeare geek. I take class with Red Bull and Shakespeare and Company whenever I can. Most recently I had the pleasure of working on clowning in Shakespeare with Zach Fine and Andy Grotelueschen from Fiasco Theater.

In 2010, I was lucky enough to join The Strange Bedfellows, a company of actors who perform Shakespeare in all of his bawdy, violent, funny, and tragic glory. The Bedfellows strive to make their audiences forget about that horrible experience they had in high school English class reading Willie. Instead of treating Shakespeare as some delicate, acquired taste, the Bedfellows romp, clown, fight with passion, and work to communicate the human-ness in all of Shakespeare’s characters.

After my stick figure comic series “The Adventures of The Unstoppable” failed to garner any fans, I accepted that drawing would never be my superpower. I also accepted that I was not, after all, The Unstoppable. Twelve-year-old me never forgot the thrill of adventure, however, and the mystery of heroes, powers, and a bad guy who maybe is only bad because he feels stuck. Or maybe he’s just bad, and that’s interesting, too.

My writing has taken me around the worlds of my brain, and also around a lot of restaurants. After years of being the pickiest eater in the south, I somehow got a stint as a city blogger and food columnist, which taught me that people are too obsessed with queso and not excited enough about chicken noodle soup. I’ve since said goodbye to journalistic writing and hello to creative writing, which, after all, is what I’ve always done.

I currently live in Florida, where I complain about the humidity but never make any plans to move. My husband and I have two cats (only two), who are excellent sounding boards for ideas.

A.K. KUYKENDALL was born in Albany, Georgia, but grew up as a military brat on the Kaneohe Bay Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH), and later at the Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base in Jacksonville, North Carolina. He is married to Magdiel Kuykendall (the love of his life) and, together, they are the proud parents of three sons—Felix, Kal-El, and Jor-El—two of whom are legally named after the Kryptonian House of El due to the author’s affinity for the story of Superman. He’s a corporate executive chef by trade, but his true passion in life is writing thought-provoking novels that blend the concepts of fact and fiction.

His writing career has been heavily inspired and influenced by Rod Serling and his classic ‘60s television series, The Twilight Zone, and by The Mercury Theatre’s October 30, 1938 broadcast of “The War of the Worlds” over the Columbia Broadcasting System radio. He was then and still is wholly enthralled with the way these two examples showcased ordinary people in extraordinary situations. He especially loved the remarkable plot twists common to The Twilight Zone stories, and the fright manifested by H.G. Wells.

When he’s not writing, he finds comfort in heading out to the golf course with his son and golf partner, Jor-El, where they altogether embarrass themselves on the fairway. He both creates and resides in Ruskin, Florida.

By day I’m a nephrologist, treating dialysis patients and kidney transplant recipients. By night I write fiction. I believe the two finest callings in life are doctor and writer, one ministering to the human condition, the other illuminating it, and each capable of transforming it.

I earned BA and MD degrees at the University of Minnesota and did my postgraduate training at Emory University in Atlanta and the University of California in San Diego. I live now in Orange County, CA.

I am a champion of the healing power of literature, and sometimes prescribe novels or short stories to patients to help them cope with illness. Fiction explores meaning in a way science cannot. Sometimes only fiction tells the truth.
