Hammer to Fall takes place several years after Playing with Fire, when Lotte catapults back into Eric's life after the two had gone separate ways. Pandemonium ensues, with supernatural beings and all-too-human entanglements and emotions. Noland has a gift for vivid description and a sense of place; his action scenes are wonderfully cinematic. As much as I liked Playing with Fire, the first book in the series, I liked Hammer to Fall even more. The characters are older and their adult dilemmas are more relatable. Eric in particular continues to develop and to grow in self-understanding and confidence. (My one quibble would be with the character Mason, who seems like too much of a goof to be the fast-rising academic star he's supposed to be. That said, he is a highly entertaining jerk!) I look forward to Book 3!

This book delivers! As a fan of the new Uncommon Bonds series, I snapped up book 2, Hammer to Fall, as soon as it was available, and it delivered on all fronts. As with book 1 (Playing with Fire), this is a meticulously crafted novel that checks all the boxes - great 3-dimensional characters, pager-turner plot that keeps you guessing, and plenty of supernatural fire-power. Noland masterfully weaves historical fiction with modern fiction, with two equally interesting intertwined narratives that converge over the course of the story. Perhaps my favorite aspect is the development of Lotte and Eric, both as individual people and as the "odd couple" that is the hallmark of their relationship. Highly recommended!

The unlikely pair get deeper into the adventures that started on book one. Book two shows Mr. Nolan expanding the characters and bonding them together for an unforgettable story. If you enjoyed book one you will love book two.
