Michael Ringering was born in Alton, IL, and raised in nearby East Alton. When he was in the third grade at East Alton Elementary School, Michael selected Miriam E. Mason’s Broomtail for a class-assigned book report, and from that moment on, set his sights on wanting to write short stories and other works of fiction. He graduated from East Alton-Wood River High School in 1984, and in 1989 earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Murray State University. Following a 14-year career working in media relations and communications in Major League Baseball, he entered the healthcare industry as a specialty practice administrator.     I

    I had always attempted to stay under the radar in both action and deeds during the days of my youth, especially once reaching high school, as my talents on the baseball field prompted an onslaught of interest by Major League Baseball scouts, all hoping to sign the next generational five-tool outfielder.

    By the time I reached my sophomore season, the tsunami of attention pushing me into the national spotlight forced my parents into overtime, working to protect me from myself, those experts projecting I was the next coming of Ken Griffey Jr., and from those wanting a piece of my looming financial windfall.

    My father, a hard-working, blue-collar stalwart, who always placed family first, went to great lengths to teach me the obligation of proper conduct, both on and off the field, by providing numerous examples of athletes who’d pissed away their opportunities due to poor choices and a lack of respect for the talents God gave them.

    If the time comes, and you make it big, there’ll always be someone looking to take you down, my father once told me at the local batting cage. No matter how far you go, how high you climb, or how much money you make, you always treat people with respect and dignity.

    I remember asking my father, Why?

    Because, he said, dropping to a knee to meet me eye-to-eye, the people you pass on the way up, are the same people you’ll pass on the way down.

    I tried to live by those words and, for the most part, held true to his expectations. As my dreams proceeded just
