How does one cope with complete and utter loneliness, living in a world occupied by one? Lawrence Steven Devane does not react well when plunged into precisely this situation. ~~~ EXCERPT: "I yearn to meet a one-legged, one-armed, one-eyed, elderly gypsy woman who spends every waking minute singing show tunes with a voice like a howler monkey undergoing torture...." ~~~ "I couldn't help but think of 'Where Is Everybody?', the first episode ever of the iconic American television anthology series The Twilight Zone. This is a well written, thought provoking, haunting, disturbing tale... it draws real emotion. What more can you ask?" ~ Michael Reviews ~~~ EVOLVED PUBLISHING PRESENTS a suspenseful, thrilling glance inside the mind of a man utterly alone in a world gone mad. At a bit over 3,600 words, this quick story is the perfect distraction from your daily grind.
Included with this short story is a special 4-chapter sneak preview of Forgive Me, Alex, the critically-acclaimed, award-winning psychological thriller novel by Lane Diamond.
This was the first piece I read by Diamond. I decided to give it a try because he seems to like a lot of the same authors I do, and this looked interesting. And I enjoyed it, thought he captured the mental decline of Devane really well. Oh, and his naming of Devane was quite clever too.
It was very well written. The author has a nice steady rhythm and towards the end I pretty much figured it out how it was going to end, but I still enjoyed seeing it play out.
This story had a very interesting premise, and like Diamond's "Wind Tunnel" I'd like to see it developed more deeply - more about the world around him, his interactions with his environment, etc.
I kept reading because I wanted to find out what happened to everyone else, so the ending was disappointing.
